Unleashing the Extraordinary…

Configurations

is a two-evening dance double-bill featuring internationally-acclaimed hip hop dance artist Bill Shannon performing Spatial Theory with guest DJ Excess, as well as choreographer Peggy Baker’s Geometry of the Circle performed by Alison Denham and Mark Brose.

Configurations closes with a Gala Fundraiser that will include a reception, silent auction and an addition to the double bill – special guest and Canadian modern dance legend Peggy Baker performing her work, earthling.

Bill Shannon is influenced by house and hiphop dance forms, silent film acting and skateboard culture. Spatial Theory is a multimedia show in four acts integrating Shannon’s unique hybrid movement, comedic elements and a provocative video illustration of his street performance explorations.

Geometry of the Circle was originally created in 1993 with composer Ahmed Hassan, who performed the vocal score live, seated in his manual wheelchair. Vocal coach and accomplished performer in her own right, Fides Krucker has been engaged for this occasion, to assist with the reconstruction of the music, which requires some unusual extended vocal techniques. The piece incorporates body, voice, and sculpture in an intimate and whimsical celebration of the power of love and creativity.

Out from Under: Disability, History & Things to Remember

is an award-winning installation that tells the compelling social history of disabled Canadians through the narration of 13 everyday objects, and has been described as “informative and luminous.” Curated by Kathryn Church, Catherine Frazee and Melanie Panitch, Out from Under pays tribute to the resilience, creativity and cultural contributions of Canadians with disabilities.

She Laughed, She Cried

is an evening of music and comedy. Fado singer Sara Marreiros and her band open the evening. Dark and brooding or gloriously ethereal, Sara’s sultry, sexy vocals are steeped in the passion of Portuguese saudade. Funny in the Head, a one-woman show by Jan Derbyshire, is the rollicking story of a bipolar comedian’s fight to stay funny. She ultimately finds an answer to the pressing question, “Is appearing normal a mental health act?”
